Blog contests are common around these days, to get good publicity easily. I have earlier blogged of some competitions in here. But, this time, this Blog Competitions, is REALLY a competition.

I haven't yet seen, any of such contests around, which such a huge list of Prizes. The list of prizes, itself is equal or, over the more, longer than a normal post.

Had "UTSARGA" Ceremony at School today; Got FAREWELL

In Indian Education system, you go to college after Class 12 often written as Class XII (in Roman form). Class XII, exams are conducted by the Education Board, you are studying in.

These were the basics.. Now.. I am in Class XII, and will be having board exams from March 4. Really worried!!!! :-s

After them, will have to leave school and go to college. We have already been, sent away from school, for self study at home. And an internet geek like me, doesn't study. (May God Bless me during EXAMS)...

Today, was our FAREWELL day at school. Our school is BIT (not BIT..but too much) traditional. So, they have named this.. "UTSARGA" ceremony keeping in view the age old tradition of Gurukul (ancient Indian Schools), where the teacher gives his blessing and friendly advice to the pupils,when they have completed their education in the Vidyalaya (school).

In short, the ceremony which used to take place in ancient Indian Gurukuls.. when the pupils.. completed their studies ; ).

We had a lot of BHAJAN sessions (spiritual songs) to relax our mind..

In short, BORED a LOT..

While wandering around, I got a blog called iMod, by Christ (Christopher).

Now, we get around a lot of bloggers, but we don't actually blog about them. Now, why did I write about him?? Its for a few reasons. First, he is very much similar to me. He also blogs from the point of view of a teenager geek blogger. He is a serious blogger though I am not yet into it.

Lots of video/audio formats are irritating

As technology has been advancing, everyday we hear and see some new video formats. Today almost every company has its own video format.

With these video formats, companies themselves feel very proud, thinking that they have their own video format. But they don't know, the actual scenario. As a whole, who are the sufferers?? The consumers!! i.e us..

Because it is us, who are to download, gather and install a different player for each format to be played. :( One program for DVDs, another for music and again a third for videos. Can't say about my readers, but I am fed up.

I have been searching out for different players, but couldn't find something very useful. But, in my search, I got this video player, worth mentioning.

A blogger friend of mine is good at coding.. I liked this new discovery or trick of him.. So thought of sharing it with my readers.

You have an MP3 file (a podcast, a song of your band, a lecture) and you want to share it with the visitors of your site. You can just put a link to the MP3 and let people download it.

All you have to do is upload your audio file to sites like Google Pages then replace audio_file_source by your source which will be like "http://name.googlepages.com/auidofile.xyz" wherein xyz is the extension of the media file which may be .mp3, .wav, .midi etc

Now this contains two tags first one is & second one is
First one is for FireFox and Netscape browsers, while the later one for Internet explorer and Opera.

To add flavor to this code, you may add tags like

autostart="true" ---> For auto playing the Music when the site is loads.
loop="true" ---> For continous play of the music.
hidden="true" ---> For hidding the player.
height="some finite value" ---> For height of the player.
width="some finite value" ---> For widht of the player.

The code works fine with .midi, .wav, .mp3 in Internet Explorer, but if you are using .mp3 as your audio file then you may experience some plugin problems.

Hence to fix this we can use advantage of "type"

All you have to do is add syntax type="audio/x-wav" in the embed tag.

So if you want to have a background music in your site then the code will look like

Sony launches limited edition Walkman

Sony stills a piece of the already crowded market with the iPods, Zunes, Sansas and Zens.This proves it as they released a limited edition E-series Walkman that got a cool lime green color coating. With each purchase comes a cute little Gachapin-shaped felt cloth case(I'm not sure what is a Gachapin anyways) you might find it a sweet deal. Blocking access to undesirable Web sites through the use of Internet protocol filters has been a common government tactic since commercial Internet access first became available here in 1995. China and Saudi Arabia are believed to extend greater censorship over the net than any other country in the world under the pretext of information control.

Most of the blacklisted sites in Saudi Arabia are either sexually explicit or about religion, women, health, drugs and pop culture. They even block access to websites about bathing suits. So if you want to buy something to swim in, they seem to treat that as if it were pornographic in Saudi Arabia.

In China, webites containing sexually explicit content were among those blocked, but they also included sites on sensitive topics such as Tibet, Taiwan, and dissident activity. China also blocks access to Google News, Typepad and Blogger hosted blogs.

But what if an innocent website is accidentally blocked by your ISP or your government. There are always legitimate reasons to visit these blocked websites. We have listed a few methods to help you access blocked websites in school, college, office or at home.

Approach 1: There are websites Anonymizer who fetch the blocked site/ page from their servers and display it to you. As far as the service provider is concerned you are viewing a page from Anonymizer and not the blocked site.

Approach 2: To access the blocked Web site. type the IP number instead of the URL in the address bar. But if the ISP software maps the IP address to the web server (reverse DNS lookup), the website will remain blocked.

Approach 3: Use a URL redirection service like tinyurl.com or snipurl.com. These domain forward services sometimes work as the address in the the url box remain the redirect url and do not change to the banned site.

Approach 4: Use Google Mobile Search. Google display the normal HTML pages as if you are viewing them on a mobile phone. During the translation, Google removes the javascript content and CSS scripts and breaks a longer page into several smaller pages. [link] View this website in Google Mobile

Approach 5: Enter the URL in Google or Yahoo search and then visit the cached copy of the page. To retrieve the page more quickly from Google's cache, click "Cached Text Only" while the browser is loading the page from cache.

Approach 6: A recent Oreilly story on accessing blocked websites suggested an approach to access restricted web sites using Google language tools service as a proxy server. Basically, you have Google translate your page from English to English (or whatever language you like). Assuming that Google isn’t blacklisted in your country or school, you should be able to access any site with this method. Visit this site via Google Proxy

Approach 7: Anonymous Surfing Surf the internet via a proxy server. A proxy server (or proxies) is a normal computer that hides the identity of computers on its network from the Internet. Which means that only the address of the proxy server is visible to the world and not of those computers that are using it to browse the Internet. Just visit the proxy server website with your Web browser and enter a URL (website address) in the form provided.

I have seen and received many e-mails which contain a lot of e-mail addresses, which can be easily used for spamming, even i do that. And it may even have happened that this is the reason you receive so many spams in your mail box. So, always follow these handy tips before forwarding an e-mail.

(1) When you forward an e-mail, DELETE all of the other addresses that appear in the body of the message (at the top). That's right, DELETE them. Highlight them, backspace them, cut them, whatever it is you know how to do. It only takes a second. You MUST click the "Forward" button first and then you will have full editing capabilities against the body and headers of the message. If you don't click on "Forward" first, you won't be able to edit the message at all.

(2) Whenever you send an e-mail to more than one person, do NOT use To: or Cc : columns for adding e-mail address. Always use the Bcc: (blind carbon copy) column for listing the e-mail addresses. This is the way that people you send to only see their own e-mail address. If you don't see your Bcc: option, click on where it says To: and your address list will appear. Highlight the address and choose Bcc: and that's it, it's that easy. When you send to Bcc: your message will automatically say "Undisclosed Recipients" in the "To": field of the people who receive it.

(3) Remove any "FW:" in the subject line. You can rename the subject more relevantly if you wish or even fix a spelling.

(4) ALWAYS hit your forward button from the actual e-mail you are reading. Ever get these e-mails that you have to open 10 pages to read one page with the information on it? By forwarding from the actual page you wish someone to view, you stop them from having to open many e-mails just to see what you sent.

Have you ever gotten an e-mail that is a petition? It states a position and asks you to add your name and address and to forward it to 10 or 15 people or entire address book. The e-mail can be forwarded on and on and on and can collect thousands of names and e-mail addresses.

A FACT: The completed petition is actually worth a couple of bucks to a professional spammer because of the wealth of valid names and e-mail addresses contained therein. If you want to support the petition, send it as your own personal letter to the intended recipient. Your position may carry more weight as a personal letter than a laundry list of names and e-mail addresses on a petition...

You may be a regular visitor of Discussion forums, but never even came to know that it is a forum. Search Engines often take you to discussion forums to give you your results. I am not talking about everyone, but a few specific ones. I have seen a lot of net surfers who don’t know what is a forum, so this is a guide for them.

Firstly, what is a forum? Actually, even I don’t know any particular defination for a forum, :D anyway, literally it means any place for discussion debating, opportunity, meeting etc. Now, the online forums are just that. Today there are forums on every subject. You can easily find a forum which interests you and take part in discussions therein. They are very easy to use and you always have moderators and administrator to help you. I will explain them later. If the topic that interests you is technology then the WWW is flooded up with such forums. I have listed some in the “You Should Visit” list.

For whom is a forum?? A forum is for anyone, I would say, who can spare some free time to be online and wants to get or share some knowledge on any topic of his interest.

What to do on a forum?? A forum is for discussion of topics of different types. If you can, you should try to start some discussion, asking some question or giving some information to others. I have seen some people going to forums and reading posts but never posting, not even replying thinking that they are not good posters. Actually, as per me, NO ONE IS A BAD POSTER. They only don’t know how to post. So here I write some posting tips for all on my own experience.

Firstly, WHAT TO POST – You may post anything. Here by anything I really mean anything which is accepted by the rules of posting. I mean avoiding any vulgar content. Let me explain with some examples. As far as I know I have seen that we always get something new on the web while surfing. Just share your knowledge with others. SHARING OF KNOWLEDGE DOESNOT DECREASE IT BUT INCREASES IT. Like suppose you come across a great website, tell everyone about it. Don’t feel inferior, what you know, may not be known by others. Or if you come across anything new, just post it. (It may even be a joke or anything else, there are different forums for not only Technology but everything viz. jokes, general discussion etc).

One more important thing that can be posted is what you think. I mean we usually visit threads. When you read them, what is the first thing that comes to your mind, just post it, dude. It might be of some help. I mean you should post your opinion on everything (as far as possible)

Secondly, HOW TO POST – Go!! just write something about it, write a bit big article (if possible) so that it may be published as a REVIEW. Hey, don’t worry, you don’t need to be a review writer, remember that all your posts are moderated especially REVIEWS.. DON’T FEEL ASHAMED JUST POST IT.

Thirdly, WANT SOME POSTING HELP?? – Don’t forget that every forum a very good team of moderators and there are also some senior members who are always ready to help you. Just PM them or contact them at their yahoo id, which is always there. THERE IS NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF, JUST POST IT, ANY MISTAKES WILL BE CORRECTED. DON’T WORRY.

Something else about a forum- A forum is run by many volunteers who don’t get anything for their work (except for some). The owner is called an administrator. And the most powerful members who have the right to edit and delete your posts are called moderators. Never fight with a moderator or administrator; they may even ban you from the forum. Moderators are the helpers of the administrator. They can be contacted easily for any help.

Bio-Diesel from Waste Vegetable Oil at your home!

Sometime ago, I had made a Science Project for my school exhibition on Bio-Diesel from Waste Vegetable Oil. It was a very exciting project as I came to know something new that we could re-use our used vegetable oil in our diesel engine car to get a very efficient fuel for the car. For anyone interested in bio-diesel and other renewable energy sources I encourage you to look through the extensive Journey to Forever website and Bio-fuel forums. This is a most exciting project so please spread the word about it. Anyway, here is a short, very short summary of the project.

This is how to make your own bio-diesel fuel from used cooking oil. The oil -- waste vegetable oil (WVO), used fryer grease, animal fats, and lard - is often free for the taking. All you need is a few common chemicals and some equipment you can easily buy or make yourself. The result is a cheap, clean-burning, non-toxic, renewable, high-quality diesel motor fuel you can use in your car without modifications.

CAUTION:
Wear proper protective gloves, apron, and eye protection and do not inhale any vapours. Methanol can cause blindness and death, and you don't even have to drink it, it's absorbed through the skin. Sodium hydroxide can cause severe burns and death. Together these two chemicals form sodium methoxide. This is an extremely caustic chemical. These are dangerous chemicals -- treat them as such!

Always have a hose running when working with them. The workspace must be thoroughly ventilated. No children or pets allowed.

Ingredients

Mixture:(a)Waste vegetable oil(WVO)-Used Vegetable Oil
(b)Methanol (CH3OH) -- 99%+ pure
(c)Sodium hydroxide (NaOH -- caustic soda, lye)

Titration:
(a) Isopropyl alcohol (b)Distilled water (c) pH tester.

Washing: (a)Vinegar (b)Water

Procedure (in short)

1. Filter WVO to remove any food scraps or solid particles.

2. Heat WVO to remove any water content (optional).

3. Perform titration to determine how much catalyst (here lye) is needed.

4. Prepare sodium methoxide by mixing sodium hydroxide and methanol.

5. Heat WVO; mix in the sodium methoxide while stirring.

6. Allow to settle, remove the glycerine (a by-product).

7. Wash and dry.

8. Check quality.

Why shouldn't you choose SCIENCE as a stream of study!!!!

This article is for students especially of class X. I am writing this article according to what I have experienced and seen. I want to make bring you out of the misconception that if you are good in studies you should opt for the Science stream or if you want to be successful opt for Science. These are completely misconceptions. I think I should cite here the example of a student, I am not going to mention his name, who secured 95% in his HSLC i.e. matriculation and so everyone forced him (you may say) to opt for science though he was a student of Arts. He was very good in English. He used to win competitions like quiz just like a joke. He had a collection of trophies. What happened to him in Class XII, he passed out with just 68%, yet having letter marks in English. So after XII he realized his mistake and then went for B.A. instead of B.Sc. and was later on successful.

So, I just want to tell everyone that being good or weak in studies doesn’t choose your stream. Even weak students can do well in the so called hard stream, Science. What do you think, is science the only tuff stream? No, all streams are hard in their own way. Being a student of the commerce stream I should say here that Accountancy is not an easy subject, nor is any other subject, if you don’t study sincerely and no subject is hard if you study sincerely.

Regarding career in the streams I should say this. Recently, a meeting was held among many great personalities who are successful in their own lives and many educationists. The result was that students of Arts have the most career options, then commerce and then comes Science.

Now, what stream to opt and how. First try to finalize an aim in life and then talk to teachers, parents and other elders or experienced persons regarding what should be done. And while finalizing your aim, don’t forget to think of your interests and other important things. Here is one more example; some think that you can become an engineer only from science. I recently came to know that you can go for engineering i.e. Computer Engineering from any stream if you have Mathematics as one of your Subject at 10+2 level.

So, finally, I think, after reading this article, you must be thinking that the writer i.e. me is an oppossor of Science. Its not so, I agree that Science is a very good stream, but remember other streams are also not bad. One more thing which I have seen being common among the students of Science stream is dropping year after year and going for coaching to get admission in a good institute, especially those who opt for professional courses like engineering and medical.

So, opt for the correct stream and don’t be disheartened later on. I have seen many students changing streams again and again. Try not to do that, just opt for the best stream you can do.

I m not talking about any Hutch Sim Cards or Recharge Vouchers, but am talking about the whole company Hutchision Essar-India is on Sale. Many companies are on the trial of purchasing it.The top are Reliance, the top Indian Company who was the first one to come forward. The next comes Vodafone - the top Cellular Phone Operator of the world.The next is Hinduja-an Indian company best known in Blighty for a passport scandal involving Peter Mandelson.

Vodafone is also facing yet another competitor for Hutchison Essar. This time it is Hinduja – an Indian company best known in Blighty for a passport scandal involving Peter Mandelson.

Some observers argue that a big conglomerate like Hinduja knows little about running a mobile phone network. They seem to forget that Hutchison itself is a big conglomerate with a very wide range of holdings.

India has overtaken China as the fastest growing cellular market. It gained 6.8 million new subscribers in November alone bringing the total to about 145 million. But the population is around 1.3 billion.

The catch is that around two thirds of India's population live outside the major cities. So, in order to be successful, Hutchison Essar will need a company which knows how to roll out a network nice and cheaply.

That company could be Vodafone, of course. However, Vodafone's ability to source handsets on a global basis looks like helping very little.

As suppliers like Nokia and LG have started to build their handsets for as little as $35 in Indian factories, that doesn't give Vodafone much room to manoeuvre with handset vendors over price.

MY FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH INTERNET!!!

So, I think u have read the Part-I of my blog, i.e. ‘MY FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH THE COMPUTER.’ Even if u have not read it, there is no problem, but would request you to read the first part and post some comments.

It had been now more than 2 years that I had met a ‘Computer’ and was quite at home with it, but had never used the Internet. I had only heard that there is something where you can get all types of information on just anything. I had heard from some of my friends and on the T.V. ads that there were something called websites that you need to access and only knew the name of only one website i.e. www.cartoonnetworkindia.com. This was just my condition when I encountered the Internet, now to start with what happened.

A friend of my father had called me to his home for something on the computer, as I knew how to do it. I went to his house. After I had done the work, he told me wait for sometime, so I was waiting as he was doing something on his PC. Then he said that he was now going to be connected to the Internet. I got excited on this and asked him if he could teach me a bit. He agreed and was now connected. Obviously, in those days the connection was very slow. He opened the Internet Explorer, something very exciting for me and typed www.timesofindia.com or something like that in the address bar, and went to the other room for some work, saying that it would take time to load. I was looking at the screen excitedly, but nothing was happening, so getting fed up, I changed the url to the only one I knew, but being in a hurry, I mis-typed the url, which was now not loading. At this time he returned back and seeing that nothing had loaded yet, check the address and asked me if I had changed it. I told him, yes and that nothing was happening so I did it. He checked, if it was connected and after verifying he logged on to Yahoo! Messenger and started to chat with some friend of his, who gave the IMvironment as the falling hearts and then gave him a “BUZZ” which was as u know a kiss. He started to laugh and said, look he is giving a kiss and then he too gave him a ‘buzz’. Just then there was a power cut and ended the session.

After many, many months of this incident, one day a friend of mine and me, decided to go to the nearest café, to do something online. He asked me, if I knew how to use the internet, I told him no, but he said, o.k. we’ll see. And so, we went, We sat at the computer, I was waiting for sometime for the owner to come and connect the computer to the internet as I had seen being done by the person. But my friend said, he must have already done. I told him, o.k. let us see. I clicked on the Internet Explorer and entered a url i.e. www.yahoo.com as I had heard from some friends and waited for it to load, and then saw that there was the same Yahoo! Messenger icon. I clicked on it, and saw a button “Get a New Yahoo! Id”, I clicked on it and a webpage opened with a form. Now we both, putting all our brains started filling the form. After filling everything, we saw that there was a option for an existing e-mail id, and none of us had that and also some other options I don’t remember now, were not filled by us. We tackled our brains for about two hours, but were not successful in achieving any fruitful result. So, just left after sometime.

MY FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH THIS STUFF CALLED COMPUTERS!!

This is a SMALL autobiography of myself, written by myself but for you on how I met my first computer.

My life with the computer started with many ups and downs. If you read this, you will surely feel like laughing (at least at the beginning) :D :D :D but that is not your fault, because even I start smiling at myself when I think of the days, when I first met a computer.

So, I met my first computer in the year 2000. At that time, I had not even seen a computer. My father was planning to buy a computer for his official works, but was fearing the money needed. I used to see on the T.V. in different ads a computer, which consisted only of a T.V. screen (later came to know that it is called monitor) and a keyboard. I told my father, that we already have a T.V. at home, so we should buy only the keyboard, so the budget will go down. He too, not knowing anything about computers, just told me “O.K., I will see”. When I discussed this with my brother, he opposingly said that, what if father works all day, we won’t be able to watch T.V. :D :D

Now, the day of the arrival of the computer arrived. I had school that day, so I asked my father, if I could have a holiday, he was negative in his reply, but said that I could have a half-day leave as the computer would arrive by 12am. I told him O.K. and both my brother and I went to school as usual. In the school, I asked my class teacher, if I could have a half-day leave, she told me to go to the Principal. I went, asked but was not allowed, as I did not have a written request from my parents. But I was tempted to see a computer as soon as possible. When I reached back the class, I lied to my class teacher that I had been allowed, not bothering of the consequences. So, my class teacher allowed me to go home at 12, as she thought that I had been allowed, while my brother did not lie and so was not allowed to go, and had a fight with me later on. (But, I request the readers NOT to follow this part).

Now, when I reached home, the ‘computer’ had arrived, and so had lots of people from the neighborhood to see this much heard strange stuff. I think I forgot to tell that at that time no one in our locality owned a computer, I mean had even seen a computer. I saw all the ‘unopened’ cartoons lying on a table. I asked why were they so, and received a reply that the computer engineer had not arrived yet. I told let’s open it. But no one allowed me nor dared to do so, as all feared that something may go wrong. Some were murmuring regarding that a computer needed an AC room, while we had not any and others.

Now, having nothing to do, I started guessing what might be inside each cartoon. The first one—a big one, must be a TV inside as the picture on the cartoon showed—I guessed. But again the same question arose, why is this TV here, we already have it. One person there commented that it must be compulsory to buy it. The next cartoon—I was told that it contained an inverter and another a battery. I spoke out that some days ago, the budget of a computer was a problem and today extra things, like the TV, inverter, battery—which we already had were bought—good for nothing. Now the next box, which contained a CPU (which I came to know later), what did it contain? Just confusing, everything required the keyboard and the TV were already there. Some said, it must be some kind of electric supply or something else. No one could even think that it was the most important part of a computer.

After some delay, the computer engineer arrived! He started assembling the parts, as if he was playing with them, picked up the keyboard and the mouse as if they were toys. My father told him to be careful. He just smiled, understanding the comment, said “Don’t Worry, Nothing will happen”. After assembling them and connecting them to the power line, did what was much awaited—started the computer. It loaded slowly with a black screen with some white text, I asked him if the computer was black and white, but he told to wait and watch. Then came a colourful screen with “Windows 98” written with a drawing of four squares, known as the Windows Logo.

This way started up the first computer I saw.
